Portrait of a woman with somewhat masculine features. The panel is very finely painted and a testimony to his mastership. Unfortunately, I have not been able to identify the woman, but judging by her diamond brooch she most probably belonded to the upper classes.
Painter of finely detailedsentimental-anecdotal genre scènes. The traditional Dutch genre piece became immensely popular again during the second half of the 19th century. The most prominent genre painters, including - besides Vetten - August Allebé, Hein Burgers, Mari ten Kate and Hendrik Hollander, worked in Amsterdam. Johannes Vetten was also Registered as a portait painter (Scheen 1881). His workcan a.o. be found in the Teylers Museum and at Sotheby's.
