Picasso. Natural History of Buffon
“I announced [...] that you were reviving Buffon, and that we are looking forward to see the book”, wrote merchant and art publisher Ambroise Vollard to Picasso on 22nd September 1936 about the engravings he commissioned him to accompany a Natural History anthology. But, with the exception of a series of 11 plates published in 47 copies, nothing was published before Picasso’s sudden death in July 1939. It is only in 1942 that Fabiani, his successor, published a book with Picasso’s 31 six-years-old engravings, made 6 years earlier, from February and June 1936 Picasso used the aquatint with sugar technique that he learned in November 1934 with size-doer Roger Lacourière. This enabled him to fulfil his dream f making an engraving as vivid and free as the painter’s brush.

Buffon ( 1707 - 1788)Buffon ( 1707 - 1788)
L’Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière, avec la description du Cabinet du Roi is a French encyclopedic collection of volume published between 1749 and 1804 by the Comte de Buffon. This is one of the most important scientific publication of the Enlightenment Century.
Buffon (1707-1788) is especially famous for his Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière, avec la description du Cabinet du Roi which he wrote over 50 years in his cabinet at Montbard first then at Tour Saint-Louis to finish with Petit Fontenet library. The encyclopedia was published in 36 volumes between 1749 and 1789, then 8 other were published after Buffon’s death thanks to Lacépède. He included all the knowledge at the time in “natural sciences”, a broad name gathering fields that today are material sciences, physics, chemistry or technology. It is in this encyclopedia that Buffon notes the morphological similarities between men and monkeys, though he thinks that monkeys do not have thoughts-which differs them from humans.

Pablo Picasso, is universally recognized as the greatest artist of the 20th century (maybe with Dali in a completely different genre). This artwork is part of a collection of artist’s rarities for most pieces, unknown or barely known. The collection consists mainly of paintings, sketches, studies, and lesser-known illustrations from many periods of the most prolific artist of our time.
All these artworks are not always the most 'beautiful' in the aesthetic sense of the word, but they all are interesting, exciting, because they represent a part of the journey of this incomparable artist, as many testimonies of the course of that genuine creative genius.
