The Swiss Ce 6/8 III was based on its predecessor, the Ce 6/8 II. They were built by the SLM (Schweizerische Locomotiv-und Maschinenfabrik) and the MFO (Machinen Fabrik Oerlikon). The engineering part of the Ce 6/8 III was manufactured by the SLM and the electrical components by the MFO. The locomotive was given the nickname "Crocodile" or "Gotthard Crocodile". The locomotive was developed for freight transport on the steep gradients such as those found on the Gotthard Bahn. A total of 18 locomotives of the Ce 6/8 III series were built, of which 9 were commissioned in 1926 and another 9 in 1927.
The Ce6/8 III locomotives were immediately deployed on the Gotthard railway. Their maximum speed was around 65 km/h. In April 1977, the last Ce 6/8 III was decommissioned. Some of these “Crocodiles” have been preserved, and some are still functional and are used for special trips.
With 4 engines and a power of 1810 kW, and the angled connecting rods, these locomotives were able to achieve a maximum speed of 65 km/h. After rebuilding the engines in 1953, the maximum speed was increased to 75 km/h. The type designation then changed to Be 6/8 III. The locomotives were now also painted green.
Development and Deployment:
The 6/8 III was a further development of the Series Ce 6/8 II. The Ce 6/8 III was intended for a flatter landscape which, besides improved performance, was also fitted with a number of differences with the Ce 6/8 II as well as the changed propulsion.
In 1956, the locomotive was converted to allow it to achieve a maximum speed of 75 km/h instead of 65 km/h. These locomotives were therefore re-classified as the construction series Be 6/8 III and renumbered to the Company Numbers 13301-13318. In 1973, this adaptation was reversed, but the locomotives continued to retain their company numbers and were classified as a construction series Be 6/8 III.
