The "Cat's Back" sewing machine gets its name from the arched shape of the uppermost bar of the machine, portraying the arched back of an agitated cat. Sewing machines were made in this model in America, London and Paris. It can be seen on the steel cover plate that patents were registered in 1882, 1883 and 1889. The sewing machine has been well used and much of the gold plated decoration is missing.. Having said that, this sturdy, small machine is in very reasonable condition for its age with no missing parts or breakages. With a new drive band (the one on the machine is original but not taught any more) would probably be in working condition. This little old machine is a talking point and ideal for decorative purposes. The machine is standing on a polished wooden base.
