Beautiful, well-preserved mendi shield from the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea.
Pretty good condition. however, there are 2 holes, probably from arrows or spears, as well as a small flaw at the edge. I made a huge effort to make them visible in the photos. The photo is from the book ‘Shields of Melanesia’ by Harry Beran and Barry Craig.
It was taken by Paul Sillitoe. In his 1988 book ‘MADE IN NIUGINI’ he describes these shields in great detail on pages 159-170.
