The Greenlandic word tupilak or tupilaq (plural tupilait) means soul or spirit of a deceased. Originally a tupilak was a vengeance figurine of the Inuit on Eastern Greenland. Nowadays, the word tupilak describes a figurine usually not much more than twenty centimetres large with a special, unusual appearance.
Various materials are used, such as narwhal, sperm whale or walrus tooth, wood and reindeer antlers. They are an important part of Greenland's Inuit art and they are precious collectibles.

This tupilak is 19 cm long.
